Must Watch Surf Movies - Part 1

With just a quick search on the internet you can find literally thousands of surfing clips or edits to watch. With so much footage out there it's easy to watch edit after edit, all short clips showcasing a few golden waves from the best surfers on the planet.

Whilst that's all good fun, we still think that you can't beat a PROPER surf film that you can kick back, relax and really get into. With that in mind here's a few of our favourites - check them out and let us know what you think!

The Endless Summer

Bruce Brown's original movie following 2 of the best surfers of the era, Robert August and Michael Hynson around the world in search of the perfect wave. It's a flashback to how surfing was, showing the truly timeless style of these 2 icons of surfing. Don't get us wrong, there are a couple of bits that are REALLY dated, but what can you expect from a film that first aired way back in 1966. It's an absolute must-see!

Riding Giants

As the name suggests, this flick is all about the biggest waves in the world! Tracking the history of big wave surfing, from the earliest pioneers at Waimea Bay in Hawaii, through the heroic solo exploits that brought Mavericks in Northern California to the attention of the world, right up to Laird Hamilton's incredible "Millenium Wave" at Teahupoo in Tahiti. Awesome storytelling and interviews with the pioneers of the sport, incredible videography and some simpy jaw-dropping waves!

View From A Blue Moon

A bit more of a modern choice, but certainly holds it's own. This is the incredible signature movie from the now 2x World Champion, John-John Florence. It's a simply epic journey around the world, showcasing JJF's superhuman surfing abliity. You'll thank us for pointing you in the direction of this one!

The Endless Summer 2

Yes, it's a sequel! This is the 1994 re-make of Bruce Brown's classic that we recommended above. Robert 'Wingnut' Weaver & Pat O'Connell are the featured surfers this time around, as Bruce brings his classic up to date. A really fun, feel-good flick, but also shows just how far surfing had come since the first film. Easy watching, lots of great cameos from the best surfers in the world at the time, and plenty of laughs along the way!

Thundercloud

Focusing on undoubtedly one of THE best waves in the world, Cloudbreak, off the island of Tavarua in Fiji. Follows the history of the wave during a really interesting time when the politics, ownership and access rights to the waves were in question. It also showcases some of the most incredible waves ever ridden at this iconic spots, and days that are truly out of this world. Stunning film.

Well I think those 5 will get you started for now. If you think we've missed a classic then let us know and we might feature it in our next installment of 'MUST WATCH SURFING MOVIES'!
